You can find out more about dental implants below, request a consultation with our Treatment Coordinator by clicking here or telephone 020 8303 7051.

What is a dental implant?

The process involves placing a small implant, or implants, into the jawbone which in a short time fuse with the bone to provide a stable foundation anchor for a single tooth or several teeth. Made from porcelain, new teeth are recreated to both look and feel like your own teeth and these are fixed to the implant to provide you with normal functionality of your mouth and completely natural looking replacement teeth.

How is the treatment carried out?

Our experienced Treatment Coordinator will meet you for your consultation. You’ll be able to discuss what ideally you would like to achieve and we’ll provide you with all the information you need about which treatment options are available to you. Implants require several appointments and this will all be explained to you.

Our dental surgeon will then discuss these with you and we’ll provide you with a detailed treatment plan which will outline exactly what the treatment will involve, how long the treatment will take and what costs are involved. Once you are completely happy with the plan, we’ll book an appointment for treatment.

We will make sure you are as comfortable as possible during your treatment and will use a normal anaesthetic. Some of our more nervous patients choose to have sedation. You may experience a little swelling for a few days which will quickly disappear. You shouldn’t need to take any time off work unless your procedure is more surgically advanced. Again, we will advise you of all this as part of your treatment plan.

Are implants suitable for everyone?

Implants are not appropriate for children or young adults as facial bone growth is incomplete. Usually, therefore, the minimum age is 18 for a dental implant treatment. There is no upper age limit with patients in their seventies, eighties or older often choosing to have implants.

What happens afterwards?

Once you have your new implant, you’ll be able to treat them just as you would natural teeth, and you will need to take care of them in just the same way.

Clinical monitoring and a thorough oral hygiene routine at home are required to ensure that the implants are maintained to a high standard. Cleaning your implants is just as easy as cleaning your natural teeth and we advise all patients to see the dental hygienist on a regular basis.
